The solution is Cold Chain not vandalism...
The outburst against big Retail Chains selling better quality of Fruits and Vegetables at very competitive prices is a result of ignorant polity who is not addressing the problem correctly.
What India needs today is a proper Cold Chain network that enables refrigirated transport of Fruits, Vegetables and live stock. Cold Chain infrastructure reduces in-transit decay of raw food items drastically and helps bring down the effective cost to the cosumer. A good Cold chain network is what enables the big Retail Chains to sell at lower prices and also they are able to provide better quality as the fruits and vegetables retain their fressness due to low storage temperatures that curtail growth of bacteria.
If our Politicians can bring a Cold Chain revolution in the stock supply network of the roadside vendor, these vendors, with their very low operational overheads can easily give the big time chains a run for their money.
Just breaking down a few stores is not in the long term interest of anybody. The Cold Chain revolution, if it happens, will be something on the lines of Dr. Kurien's Operation Flood (http://www.nddb.org/aboutnddb/operationflood.html) and offer a sustainable solution to
a) Keep our roadside vegetable and Fruit Vendor competitive inspite of the Retail Boom
b) Save Fruits and Vegetables from decay, just ensuring an increased supply that can be made available at very competitive pricing thus extending the reach of good quality food to the poor and needy.
